The Golden Rules of Technical Hat Care

OnPeak Hats

How you wash a technical running cap determines whether it lasts for years or loses its shape and sun-blocking stiffness in a single afternoon. Because performance caps, like those from Onpeak or Ciele, rely on technical synthetic fibers and specially structured brims to retain their shape, throwing them into a standard clothes dryer or using harsh detergents is a quick way to ruin them.

Here is the definitive step-by-step breakdown to keep your performance headwear fresh, odor-free, and structurally intact.

The Golden Rules of Technical Hat Care

Before diving into the steps, keep these three rules in mind to protect the sweatband elasticity and the internal brim structure:

  • Never Use Fabric Softener: Fabric softeners leave a microscopic waxy film over the fabric. This clogs the specialized pores of moisture wicking materials and completely kills the hat's breathability and sweatband performance.

  • Avoid the Clothes Dryer at All Costs: The high heat of a commercial or household dryer will warp synthetic brims (even flexible ones) and break down the delicate elastics inside the sweatband.

  • Check the Brim Core: Most modern high-performance caps use a flexible plastic or high-density foam core, making them highly resilient. However, if you are washing an older or cheaper traditional sports cap that uses a cardboard core insert, it cannot be submerged in water at all and must be strictly spot-cleaned.

The Step-by-Step Washing Process

To extend the lifespan of your gear, Hand Washing is always the preferred expert method, though a gentle machine cycle can work if you take the right precautions.

Method 1: The Preferred Hand Wash (Best for Longevity)

Hand Washing Method

Fill a clean sink or basin: Warm water.

Fill a sink or bucket with warm (not hot) water. Add about a teaspoon of mild laundry detergent or a specialized sports wash designed to break down body oils.

Pre-treat the sweatband: Targeting salt stains.

The sweatband absorbs the most abuse. Dip a soft-bristled toothbrush or microfibre cloth into the soapy water and gently scrub the interior sweatband and the areas showing white salt lines.

Soak the cap: 15 to 30 minutes.

Submerge the entire hat in the soapy water. Let it sit for 15 to 30 minutes to allow the detergent to lift trapped sweat, sunscreen, and environmental grime out of the synthetic fibers.

Rinse thoroughly: Cold water.

Drain the soapy water and rinse the cap completely under cold running water until the water runs crystal clear and no soap bubbles remain.

Air dry properly: Shape retention.

Do not wring out or twist the hat. Instead, gently press it between a clean towel to absorb excess moisture. Reshape the dome with your hands and place it over a small bowl, a rolled-up towel, or hang it up to air dry completely in the shade.

Method 2: The Machine Wash (The Fast Route)

If you are short on time and choose to machine wash your performance caps, you need to shield them from the mechanical friction of the washing machine cycle.

  • Use a Delicate Bag: Always place the cap inside a mesh laundry bag. This prevents the straps or brim from getting tangled around the machine's central agitator or other clothing items.

  • Cold & Gentle Settings: Set your washing machine to the Gentle/Delicate cycle using Cold Water Only.

  • Wash with Similar Weights: Never wash your lightweight running gear alongside heavy items like denim jeans, heavy towels, or hoodies, which can crush the brim structure during the high-speed spin cycle.

Pro-Tip for Odor Management: If your sports cap has picked up a stubborn, sour sweat smell that standard detergent won't shift, add half a cup of white vinegar to the soaking water. Vinegar acts as a natural, fabric-safe deodorizer that breaks down stubborn bacteria and body oils without damaging technical performance materials.
